Where your money goes: BSE StAR MF, folio, registrar

The route from your bank to your units, who keeps the records, and how to find every folio you own.

When you tap "invest" on a ₹100 Daily SIP, the money leaves your bank and, a day or two later, units appear. What happens in between decides whether your money is safe, and it is worth knowing exactly who holds what. The short version: a distributor never holds your money, and the units are in your name.

The route your money takes

  1. Mandate. When you set up a SIP, you approve a UPI AutoPay mandate once. This lets your bank release each instalment on schedule without you tapping every day.
  2. Order. On each SIP day, the platform places your purchase order on BSE StAR MF, the mutual fund order platform run by BSE. The order carries your PAN, the scheme, the amount and the distributor's ARN and EUIN.
  3. Money. Your bank sends the instalment through the exchange's clearing system to the fund house. It does not pass through the distributor's bank account at any point.
  4. Allotment. The AMC allots units at the applicable NAV and records them in your folio, which is an account in your name at that AMC.
  5. Confirmation. The registrar sends you a confirmation by email and SMS, and the units show in the app, usually within one to two working days.

If the platform shut down tomorrow, your units would still sit in your folio at the AMC. You could redeem them directly from the AMC or the registrar with your PAN and folio number.

Folios and the registrar

A folio is like a bank account number, but at a fund house. You get one folio per AMC, and all your schemes from that AMC can sit under it. The folio holds your name, PAN, bank account, nominee and every transaction.

The records are kept by a registrar and transfer agent (RTA). In India there are two: CAMS and KFintech. Each AMC uses one of them. The RTA is the one who actually allots your units, sends your statements, and processes your redemption. This is why you can log in to CAMS or KFintech directly and see your holdings even without the app.

Keeping track of everything

  • CAS. The Consolidated Account Statement lists every mutual fund folio against your PAN, across both registrars, in one document. You can request it from CAMS or KFintech by email, monthly or on demand. Read it once a quarter.
  • MITRA. A SEBI-backed search tool for forgotten or inactive folios. If a parent set up a fund for you years ago, or you invested through a now-defunct platform, MITRA can trace it by PAN.
  • Nomination. Every folio should carry a nominee. Without one, your family needs a legal process to claim the units. It takes two minutes to set in the app and is checked at KYC.
  • KYC. Done once, with PAN and Aadhaar, through a video or Aadhaar-based process. Your KYC status is shared across all AMCs, so you do not repeat it for every fund.

A SIP day on the calendar

Example
Monday 9:00 amOrder placed on BSE StAR MF, ₹100 debited by mandate
Monday before 3:00 pmOrder and money received, Monday's NAV applies
Monday by 11:00 pmMonday's NAV published
Tuesday or WednesdayUnits allotted to your folio by the RTA
What you own₹99.995 ÷ Monday's NAV, in units, in your name

If Monday is a market holiday, the whole chain shifts to the next working day, and the mandate debit moves with it.

Exam trap
Watch out. A nominee is not optional housekeeping. Folios without a nominee cause real grief for families, and a stale bank account on a folio means a redemption can bounce. Check both once a year, and request a CAS so that nothing you own goes missing.

Remember

  1. Orders go through the exchange platform; money moves from your bank to the AMC and never touches the distributor's account.
  2. Units are allotted into a folio in your name at the AMC, usually within one to two working days.
  3. CAMS and KFintech are the two registrars; they allot units, keep records and process redemptions.
  4. A CAS shows every folio against your PAN. MITRA finds forgotten folios.
  5. Set a nominee and keep your bank details current on every folio.
