KYC in ten minutes: PAN, Aadhaar, bank, nominee
PAN, Aadhaar with a linked mobile, your own bank account and a nominee. Done once, on your phone.
KYC, "know your customer", is the one piece of paperwork that stands between you and your first SIP. It has a reputation for being painful. It no longer is. With a PAN, an Aadhaar linked to your mobile, and a bank account in your name, the whole thing takes about ten minutes on your phone and you only ever do it once. This chapter walks through each piece so nothing surprises you.
What you need before you start
- PAN. Your permanent account number is the anchor of every mutual fund record in India. Every folio, every statement and every tax report is tied to it. Make sure the name on your PAN matches your Aadhaar and your bank, down to the spelling and initials.
- Aadhaar with a linked mobile. The OTP for Aadhaar-based KYC comes to the mobile number registered with UIDAI. If that number is old, update it at an Aadhaar centre first, or choose the video route instead.
- A bank account in your own name. Your SIP money leaves this account, and every redemption comes back to it. Keep a cancelled cheque or a bank statement showing your name, account number and IFSC handy. Joint accounts are fine if you are a holder.
- Your own email and mobile. Statements, OTPs and tax documents go here. Use your own, never a family member's or a distributor's. Shared contact details are a common cause of lost folios later.
The two routes
SEBI permits two ways to complete KYC without visiting an office.
- Aadhaar-based KYC. You enter your Aadhaar number, receive an OTP, and your name, photo, address and date of birth are pulled from UIDAI. You add PAN, confirm the details, sign on screen and you are done. This is the fastest route.
- Video KYC. You join a short recorded video call. An agent asks you to show your PAN card and read out a code, and may ask you to confirm your location. This route suits people whose Aadhaar mobile is not current, or whose address has changed.
Either way, your KYC record is registered with a KYC Registration Agency and becomes usable across every fund house. If you later invest through another platform, you will not repeat the process. You may be asked to re-validate if your details have changed or if the record predates current rules.
Nominee: two minutes that protect your family
A nominee is the person the fund house will pay if something happens to you. Without one, your family will need legal documents, indemnities and months of back and forth to claim what is already theirs. With one, it is a form and a death certificate. You can name up to a few nominees and split the holding between them in percentages, and you can change them later at no cost. If you genuinely do not want to name anyone, you must say so explicitly; the form will not let you skip the question silently.
| Nominee 1, spouse | 60% |
| Nominee 2, mother | 40% |
| Guardian named for any nominee under 18 | Yes |
| Total allocation | 100% |
The percentages must add up to 100. If a nominee is a minor, you also name a guardian. Keep a note of what you chose, and tell the people you named. A nomination nobody knows about is only half useful.
What happens after you submit
Your KYC status typically shows as "in process" for a short while, then "validated". You can set up a UPI AutoPay mandate as soon as that happens, and a first SIP can start the next working day. Orders go to BSE StAR MF, and the fund house allots units to a folio in your name, under your PAN. The distributor never holds your money. Your first statement from the fund house or its registrar, CAMS or KFintech, will arrive by email and is your proof of ownership. Check it for spelling, bank details and the nominee. If anything is wrong, fix it now while it is one folio, not later when it is six.
Remember
- You need PAN, Aadhaar with a current mobile, a bank account in your name and your own email and phone.
- Aadhaar OTP KYC is fastest. Video KYC works when your Aadhaar mobile or address is out of date.
- KYC is done once and is valid across every fund house and platform.
- Name a nominee, split in percentages adding to 100, and tell them. It saves your family months.
- Check the first statement for name, bank and nominee. Fix errors while there is one folio.
